A Virtual Cinematography System for First Person Shooter Games

We present a virtual cinematography system for 3D shooter games. This system replaces the strict first-person view associated with such games with a camera system that can switch between multiple camera modes. The switching is carried by the system in real time as game-play progresses. The choice of which camera modes to provide, and the decisions about how and when to employ them, are informed by cinematography theory and practice. We argue that applying principles from cinematography to camera-work in computer games, results in a more interesting and engaging experience for the player. Our system has been implemented as a modification of the Quake II game engine.
